MegaBonk Best Tomes Tier List – The Meta, and what's Broken Right Now

When it comes to Tomes in MegaBonk, not all upgrades are made equal. Some straight-up carry your early runs, while others are basically dead weight. Here’s a full breakdown based on current community testing and casual-play performance.

    S-Tier Tomes (Must-Haves)

    XP Tome XP Tome

The single best tome in the game — nothing else compares. Every point goes directly into faster scaling, snowballing your power curve early. Always grab it when it appears.

    Chaos Tome Chaos Tome

Unlocked later in progression but surprisingly strong. Adds a bit of unpredictability that can turn average runs into broken ones — very RNG dependent. Best for players comfortable with chaotic scaling and random effects.

Chaos can grant Size, Pickup Range, Lifesteal, Movement Bonuses, HP, XP (combo with XP tome), Luck, and more. However, it can also roll weaker stats like Silver Gain, Knockback, Duration, Shield, or HP Regen. For the deep dive and why we rate it so highly, see our full guide: Chaos Tome Meta (2025).

    Luck Tome Luck Tome

Amazing on most characters (non-fox especially), helping you secure legendary items that carry runs. You can stack Luck through many other means, so it’s sometimes skippable, but it remains a premium pickup.

    A-Tier Tomes (Top Performers)

Cooldown Tome Cooldown Tome (Could be S-tier)

Slightly below Damage but still fantastic. Helps smooth out skill rotations and ability uptime. Great synergy with rapid-fire builds or aura-heavy setups.

Projectile Tome Projectile Tome (Could be S-tier)

Dominates the early game thanks to sheer consistency. Even common rarity is strong — higher rarities don’t change much beyond +1 projectile, but that’s still great value. Keeps damage flowing safely from range.

    Damage Tome Damage Tome

Straightforward and powerful — boosts base DPS reliably. Great for nearly every build type.

    B-Tier Tomes (Decent, Situational)

    Size Tome Size Tome

Very good all-around tome when you build into it. Helps your runs significantly on most characters. This will become better when player abilities have an opacity slider. Currently it becomes too difficult to see your screen at max level.

    Gold Tome Gold Tome

Helps to get plenty of items, and it’s fun. Scales well and combos with many gold-gaining items. Generally best on Robinette; you can argue for it on any class, but opportunity cost is real.

    C-Tier Tomes (Barely Worth It)

    Lifesteal Tome Lifesteal Tome

Feels good, but you don’t need much lifesteal to be fully sustained — you can get it through shrines and Chaos procs.

    D-Tier Tomes (Weak Picks)

Pickup Range Tome Pickup Range Tome

This tome actually feels really good, and replaces the need for magnets, though it does feel bad to have this take up a tome slot in the current meta.

    Difficulty Tome Difficulty Tome

For leaderboard runs exclusively. You can stack plenty of difficulty through shrines around the map, and other means. Not for casual players, but essential for WR runs.

(Though, with the chaos tome buffs, it may fall out of WR runs, we will see.)

    F-Tier Tomes (Trap/Super-Niche Choices)

Avoid these entirely unless you enjoy making the game harder for yourself:

    • Movement Speed Tome Movement Speed Tome — Sounds useful but doesn’t scale well; you’ll barely notice it.
    • Silver Gain Tome Silver Gain Tome — Ignore this.
    • Shield Tome Shield Tome — Low impact. Lifesteal & HP are much more significant.
    • Regen Tome Regen Tome — Slow recovery that doesn’t keep up with damage taken.
    • Projectile Speed Tome Projectile Speed Tome — Adds little practical value.
    • Crit Chance Tome Crit Chance Tome — Doesn’t make enough difference; crit is easy to get elsewhere.
    • Knockback Tome Knockback Tome — Actively hurts DPS consistency.
    • HP Tome HP Tome — Too little scaling to matter.
    • Evasive Tome Evasive Tome — Barely noticeable evasion boost.
    • Armor Tome Armor Tome — Small % buffs that don’t matter; niche armor-stacking may exist with Sir Oofie.
    • Duration Tome Duration Tome — Not impactful enough (future tech may emerge).
    • Thorns Tome Thorns Tome — Negligible reflected damage.

    Quick Takeaways

    • XP Tome and Luck Tome are the real MVPs — build around them. Projectile Tome is amazing for newer players or certain builds.
    • Damage and Cooldown Tomes are reliable backbone picks.
    • Chaos Tome adds spice if you’ve unlocked it — also a convenient source of lifesteal.
    • Everything else ranges from niche to not worth.

Where This Fits in the Meta

If you’re optimizing runs for WR attempts, stick to a priority like: XP → Luck/Chaos → Difficulty → Cooldown/Damage/Size. For Casual runs, your only real requirement is the XP tome, and a way to stack luck. The rest can be situational.

I do believe there is a lot more experimenting to be done, we will likely see the strangest builds rise to the surface. Have fun with your runs, and do try new things!
